True, the prices might lead you to think that way, but the quality is such that the section is outstanding in chess set design and value. What do you get for the price? You get the Baron design with the Baron quality. You get piece of mind knowing that the sets you purchase are a discerning choice, just like the Jaques design, Baron provides chess sets with heritage and with an appreciating future. Look towards the end of the section for often missed excellent chess sets - we can't squeeze everything into the luxury chess section, and these last few chess sets only just miss the category - sometimes for arbitrary reasons.

Towards the end of the mid-price range we have some often missed outstanding value chess sets. After all - if you're this far through, why not go to the luxury section - right? Wrong. These are luxury too - but there has to be some price division. This chess set could just be the best value in the entire inventory. It represent particular value accross our range. The chess pieces are triple weighted, made from solid chidar wood with the dark pieces blackened for the ebony appearance. The chess pieces are excellently carved with great attention to the detail of the knight. The pieces are more reminiscent of expensive sets of chess pieces judging from the attention to detail in the knight and it's companion chess pieces. The set is traditional staunton. It has a king with height of 3.75 inch. The chess pieces would be well suited to a board with 1.75 inch or 2 inch individual squares.

M2029 Globe Fret Weighted Chess Set 5.5 inch King

Double weighted and King at a lofty 5.5 inches. Well, if ya can't build out - build up! It worked for New York huh? With its weighting and height the King chess piece sets the standard in this fret style set. The weighting is good (double) and is the difference between more economical chess pieces and this fine set of Globe Fret double weighted chess pieces. Many sets that have this kind of detail have no weighting, which is admittedly difficult for this kind of base. But we insisted that weighting be a part of the design and so double weighted it is! The board for this set should be 1.75 inch squares.

M2031 Philippino Staunton - 6 inch King Chess Set
Gosh - 6 inches? Eeek - what's the weather like up there buddy? The 6 inch king takes the spotlight, but notice other aspects of the chess pieces too. The base of the king chess piece is small enough to be accomodated on a board with individual squares of 1.75 inches although if you prefer 2 inches that would be good too. The design of the King and Bishop chess pieces are highlighted by a series of mid discs, kind of Jupiter-esque. The Philippino style of chess piece comes through strongly in the rounded bases, which is strongest in the knight as it offsets it's handsome sleek top. The Rook's button-tiered style make this chess piece complement the set well. Playing chess with pieces that have some height is an enjoyable experience. With this set and it's 6 inch king, the board doesn't need to take up too much room, with a suggested 1.75 inch squares or maximum of 2 inches.

Oooh, that lovely rosewood. This triple weighted rosewood chess set with a larger than normal King at 4.5 inches. The set is rustic in nature and the size of the King makes for a great chess set that needs room and adds atmosphere. Along with it's neighbour the 'Exec Luke', this set is outstanding value and could easily be placed in the luxury sets section. The detail of the knight is, like our luxury chess range, intricate. All the teeth show along with a detailed mane - he could do with a tooth brush if you ask me. What? You weren't asking me... Well anyway, this is staunton at it's best and given extra finesse with the Knight's detail. The board for this larger triple weight set of chess pieces should have 2 inch squares.

Ebonised triple weighted chess pieces with a 4 inch King and generous base dimension. A perfect tournament chess set with a little more luxury than usual. See the detail of the nostrils, the eyes, ears - someone has really taken some time with this one! Should be in the luxury section but we've got to draw the line somewhere and we do it based on price and what Janet tells us (she's so bossy!) Many of the luxury chess sets are no better than this example - it just depends on what our suppliers charge us. The level of staunton finesse is rarely this high - a wonderful chess set. M2025 Concentric Ball in Bud Rosewood Chess Set

The largest of the concentric ball chess sets. The King is 5.5 inches high in this Bud Rosewood set of chess pieces. Because of this the balance value is quite high, but normal for chess pieces with this size of King. It's a real delight to play with larger pieces if you have the room for it. With this chess set the base is not too large and only needs a chessboard with 1.75 inch individual squares. The design of the pieces are refreshing with a clear staunton influence but the chess pieces are enhanced by a mystic design interference. Come on - go with me on this.... the imagination behind this is quite remarkable, and whatever the craftsperson was 'on' worked well - wonder if there is any spare going... The set shows a flair of chess piece design with the detail of each piece exemplary. The pieces are all recognisable staunton but all have the eastern design as an enhancement. Very good value rosewood set with excellent weight and balance. Needs a board with 1.75 inch squares. The pieces feel good in the hand and comprise a classic staunton set of mid priced chess pieces. The pawns have a particularly good appearance - often the tell-tale symbol of an excellent set, the grain of the rosewood is very attractive.

Let me draw your attention to the Bishop - it's beautifully crafted with a perfectly sized head (big - like mine). Traditional staunton - good for tournaments and good for social playing too. M2023 Magnetic Luxury Travel Chess Set with Board
An exceptional travel magnetic chess set with a King at 2.5 inch high and a total weight of 1.9kg. The set measures 12 inch x 12 inch and is 1.6 inch thick. The set has an internal insert for each chess piece. The pieces are well finished with good attention to detail, and the attached, enclosing board is very high in quality. The set and it's parts are finished very well and the inserts fit well with no sticking or rough parts. We have one of these in the office ready to pack away when the boss walks in - it's our choice when the need is 'on the go'. We sent Janet to the North Pole with this one, and it came back intact. Admittedly the chess pieces were now frozen on instead of magnetized - but it still did very well. There is a ball-bearing midway through the insert edge to keep the insert in it's place, this operates smoothly and without any exertion needed to open or close. With many cheap travel sets on the market, this isn't one of them - a very good value and high quality magnetic chess set. (And no - she didn't even bring a polar bear back for us).

M2020 Staunton Wein Design Chess Pieces
The Wein design is a recognized style - clearly Germanic. The chess pieces have a slight tweak here with a corresponding cap to the bishop. They are tastefully designed to be pleasing to the eyes and have a slight base weighting to provide chess piece balance - don't want to be knocking the pieces over (unless you're losing - Oops - Oh well...have to start again...). The stocky rook has a complimentary knight with side swathes to provide the wein chess piece appearance. We recommend a chess board with 1.5 inch or possibly 1.75 inch squares.

Another Globe masterpiece with larger King. The manufacture is a blending of the tradition of Staunton with the exotic middle eastern style. M2019 Concentric ball bud rosewood Chess Set King 3.50 inch
Once again we have a beautiful example of a set that is just a perfect blend of staunton and a clever bit of imagination. Isn't this great? The Concentric is a twist on the traditional Staunton style to produce chess men that are solidly different than general sets of chess pieces available. The King stands 3.5 inches high. Each piece is dominated by the design of the concentric ball in the middle of the piece - they are quite unique. And I love the expression on the knight's face. Very chiseled and looking very focused. The quality of the manufacture is also very good with the carving of the piece sections very intricate leaving a robust rustic appearance. The board for this set of chess pieces should have 1.5 inch squares.

This travel chess set is very good value - having very thick wooden casing and good quality chess men. It has a highly glossed surface with lovely high quality chess pieces. The pieces are carved with great attention to detail. They have good magnetism and can easily stay on the board with the board turned upside down. The magnetism is unobtrusive but very functional. Ooooh..., too much! Similar to the M2002 Mughal Fret the sheesham chess pieces have differences and have more standard bases. The mid-section of each of the chess pieces has significant detail. The traditional Staunton chess piece design has been given an exotic flavour that is brought together by the knight's telling traditional features. One of the more ornate chess piece is the queen which has detailed work from the bottom up through to the top. The chess board for these chess pieces would be best suited by a rustic design with 1.5 inch or 1.75 inch individual squares.

M2003 Coiled Orthodox Weighted Chess Set

This one has a kinda orthodox church look. An unusual set of chess pieces that we haven't seen elsewhere. Among the chess pieces, the King with it's large and prominent cross lies at one end of the spectrum whilst the pawns with an ornate shank lie at the other end. The Knights have a look on their faces and expression bound in their body pose that makes them appear ready to uncoil and come to life. We love the chess set - but please remember that when you're playing you're not attending church and don't have to sing hyms. You can sing The Beatles catalogue instead. We haven't seen this design in chess sets elsewhere. The chess set has significant attention to detail in their manufacture. The knight is the carrier of the staunton flag but with differences. The set isn't appropriate for tournament play because of not adhering strictly enough to the Staunton chess style but retains enough of the design to be able to clearly distinguish between the pieces - the thinking behind the Staunton idea.
